Castle Cary Flax Mills
Project Description
The Higher Flax Mills is one of the largest and best preserved factories of the once substantial Somerset and Dorset flax industry formerly producing linen warps, rope, twine and webbing from flax, hemp and tow. The complex is remarkably complete and includes a water and steam powered flax mill, warehousing offices, one of two millponds and parts of the open ropewalks; a rare survival.
The mills represent an exemplary example of an industrial business of its time. Suffice to say all the buildings within the 'complex' are listed.
Kirkham Board have carried out several projects at the mills, and have acted in Architectural, Quantity Surveying, and Project Managerial roles; as well as undertaking numerous 'building surveys' in order to establish conditional benchmarks and to prioritise the various preventative maintenance works required over the years.
